MORGANTOWN — After a loss to St. Clairsville, Ohio by a score of 8-4 on Thursday, Morgantown Post 2 returned to Dale Miller Field on Friday looking for vengeance and unfortunately for Wellsburg Post 34, they were up next on the schedule.
Post 2 would earn 16 runs on nine hits Friday for a 16-0 mercy-rule win. With run support like that behind him, starting pitcher Cody Thomas was able to stay calm and throw five scoreless innings. The former UHS Hawk only allowed three hits and struck out seven batters, while only throwing 54 pitches. Also worth mentioning is the fact that 44 of those pitches were for strikes.
After going 5-11 through their first 16 games, head coach Andy Altemus and his Post 2 players have found their stride winning five out of the last six games played. During those six games (all played in July) Morgantown (10-12) is averaging eight runs a game, while only allowing half of that total at four allowed to opponents. Three of those six games have seen at least nine runs as well (9,12,16).
After a quick first inning on offense that produced no runs, Morgantown went to work in the second scoring three runs and jumping out to an early lead they wouldn’t look back from.
Six different Morgantown batters earned hits on Friday, with first baseman Caleb Cottle leading the way. The former MHS man went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate to lead Post 2. Aaron Forbes also made an impact with two hits of his own, one for a double and a home run in the fourth inning. Both players also scored three runs for Morgantown.
The majority of those runs were earned in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Post 2 plated five in the third and then eight more in the fourth, blowing open the lead 16-0 and giving Post 34 no chance of extending the game.
Morgantown will enjoy some time off over the weekend before they travel to Bridgeport Post 68.
