West Virginia slugger McGwire Holbrook transfers to Florida State

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia will enter its next baseball season without one of its top hitters.

Sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook announced Thursday he was transferring to Florida State.

“Thankful for all of the memories and relationships I made at WVU,” Holbrook tweeted. “After much thought, I have decided to come home and play baseball at Florida State University.”

Holbrook is from Orlando, Fla.

In helping the Mountaineers finish 33-22 last season, Holbrook batted .327 with six home runs and was second on the team with 43 RBIs. Besides catcher, Holbrook also played designated hitter.

Coming out of high school, Holbrook was the No. 53 prospect from the state of Florida, and he batted .267 in limited action as a freshman at WVU.

He thrived in his second season, playing in 54 games. His .509 slugging percentage led the team and he also added 13 doubles and only struck out 19 times over 171 at-bats.

Holbrook is currently playing summer baseball for the Wausua (Wis.) Woodchucks in the Northwoods League.

Florida State went 34-25 last season and was eliminated in the Auburn Regional of the NCAA tournament.

Holbrook is the third player — but first starter — to transfer from the Mountaineers, joining pitchers Zach Ottinger and Deaton Oak.
