Sheriff: New phone scam targets concealed carry permit holders

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department warns local residents of a new phone scam regarding concealed carry permits.

Department officials said they received a call from a local permit holder who reported receiving a voicemail from someone claiming to be with the Concealed Carry Permit Customer Service Department.

The voicemail provided an 800 number to call regarding their certification.

Upon calling the 800 number, you are connected to an automated system and are asked to leave a message.

The sheriff’s department would like residents to know they do not use 800 numbers or an automated phone system.

Legitimate calls from the sheriff’s concealed weapons staff would provide the local department number and their name.

Anyone with questions can contact Dana Hawkins at the sheriff’s office at 304-291-7260.
