West Virginia University, including WVU Tech, Potomac State College, Extension offices and WVU Research Corp., will close Monday, following a declaration issued by Gov. Jim Justice proclaiming a state holiday in recognition of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth, which is held on June 19 each year, celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States. This year, June 19 falls on a Sunday. As a result, the University will follow its protocol to observe the holiday on the following Monday, June 20.
Consistent with past practice and as previously planned, WVU will observe West Virginia’s June 20 birthday, also a state holiday, on Nov. 23 extending the Thanksgiving break.
While classes (undergraduate and graduate) are canceled Monday, some essential campus services will remain open. WVU Health Sciences faculty, staff and students who are working in patient care areas or in clinical rotations should check with their dean, program director or clinic manager.
The closure will be effective for personnel beginning at midnight through 11:59 p.m. Monday. Some employees will be contacted by their supervisor with additional information regarding a holiday work schedule to support ongoing campus services.
Employees with questions or concerns should contact their supervisor.
The university will reopen on a normal operating schedule and classes will resume on Tuesday, June 21.
