Barbara Summers

Barbara Beth Summers, 65, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, June 12, 2022, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 11, 1957, in Jersey City, N.J., Barbara was a daughter of Marlene Sharon Mintz Kandel and her husband, the late Stanley Kandel, of California, and her birth father, the late Howard Peyton.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 16 years, D. Kent Summers; her two children, George Austin Mutz and his wife Vicky, of Taiwan, and Haley Elizabeth Mutz and her husband Jefferson, of Pittsburgh; three stepchildren, David Michael Summers, Ashley Elizabeth Summers and Jenna Kathryn Summers; and her brother, David Michael Kandel and his wife Jodi, of Claremont, Calif.

Barbara received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from San Diego State University. She worked for 24 years as a federal court reporter, was a member of the Court Reporters Board of California and taught federal court reporting in Denver for a period of time. She also worked locally with the Morgantown Police Department for 10 years.

She was a member of the Morgantown Church of Christ. Barbara was a word game buff, which, as luck would have it, is how she met her husband, Kent. She enjoyed traveling and catching-up with her numerous friends from all throughout the world.

Barbara was always authentically herself. She was very much a “what you see is what you get” kind of person, which made her all the more endearing to her family and friends, who will miss her greatly.

Friends may join the family to honor Barbara’s life and legacy at the Morgantown Church of Christ, 361 Scott Ave., Morgantown, from 4:30 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 17, officiated by Brad Schrum and Richard Moore.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Barbara’s memory to Animal Friends of North Central WV, P.O. Box 1090, Dellslow, WV 26531.
