William “Bill” Matthew Straub, of Westover, passed away on May 27, 2022. Son of the late Ted J. and Laura Sabolo Straub, Bill was born in Morgantown on June 23, 1951, and grew up on Chestnut Ridge Road. He graduated from Morgantown High School and attended Fairmont State.
As a young man, Bill served for six years in the U.S. Army Reserves based in Morgantown. Bill worked for several years at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. and later as an auto mechanic in the family business, TAECO (previously Ted’s Auto Electric) in Morgantown. In addition, for many years, Bill started and operated his own lawn and landscaping business.
As a teenager and young man, Bill displayed talent as an artist and produced several dozen paintings, especially landscapes and abstract art. Throughout most of his life, Bill was dedicated to his hobby of restoring old cars, especially 1960s era Triumphs. He also enjoyed fishing in Florida with his cousins. Bill had many friends whom he valued and kept in touch with over the years.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Darlene “Dolly” Straub in 2014. He is survived by his brothers, John (Karol), of Vienna, Va., and Robert “Bob” T. Straub, of Hammonton, N.J.; and nephews, Paul M. Straub (Natalie), of Larkspur, Calif., and Mark Straub (Vai), of London, England. In addition, he is survived by his first wife, Alyse Emerson, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; cousins, Sharon Hansen, Steve Straub and Susan Lee, of Tampa, Fla., and Paul C., Phil and Joe Straub, of Florida; cousins, Diane Gutman, of Portland, Ore., and Mark Valentine, of Mukilteo, Wash.; and cousins, John and Robert Sabolo and Patricia Sabolo Pergament, of Michigan.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at noon on Friday, June 3, with the Rev. Fr. Brian J. Crenwelge officiating. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Garden in Westover.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill Straub’s name may be made to St. Mary’s Trust Fund for the Poor, c/o St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Ave., Star City, WV 26505 or a local charity of your choice.
