Trinity Christian names Codey Horton as new boys head basketball coach

MORGANTOWN – Trinity Christian has named Codey Horton as the Head Coach for the Boys Basketball Program. He currently serves as Athletic Director at Trinity as well.

Horton was delighted to be selected for the position and says he knows the potential of the roster he will inherit.

“I am super thrilled and blessed to have this opportunity to be the head coach for Trinity Christian,” said Horton of his new position. “I had the privilege of watching the basketball games this past season and I can really see potential in this team. Two of the main things I want to focus on this year are God and teamwork.”

Horton played for Richwood High School under Head Coach JB Miller where he discovered coaching was his calling.

“My senior year, I fell in love with the game. As a post player, I had the chance to see the game and learn
a lot of different positions by always seeing what was going on and trying to predict what would happen next.”

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Chavez stated, “Coach Horton is a fine choice for this position as he is a man of great influence among our student body, in the church, and in the state of West Virginia. He is a fine godly role model for the next generation, and we anticipate great things in the program. We are excited and look forward to seeing the Lord do more than Codey can think or imagine in the coming years. I only wish my now graduated sons had a chance to play under Coach Horton’s leadership.”

Although Horton has coached golf, volleyball, and basketball throughout his career, his preference is basketball because of his love for the game.

After graduating from WVU, Horton served as the head coach for the Richwood High girls basketball team and a few years later he became an assistant coach for the Webster County boys basketball team that ended the season 28-0 and won the state championship in 2019.

Prior to coming to Trinity Christian in 2021, he was head coach for numerous sports, including boys basketball, at Mattamuskeet Early College High School in North Carolina. Last season he served as an
assistant coach for the girls basketball team under Coach Mike Baldy when the team won a Region 2 Section 2 championship.

During the next few weeks, Horton will be working on his coaching staff as well as searching for a Middle School boys basketball coach, saying he wants to set the values and character of the program early on in the players careers at Trinity.

Trinity Christian is scheduled to tip-off their season opener on December 6, 2022, against Petersburg at home.
