MORGANTOWN — West Virginia filled one of the major needs on the roster through the transfer portal with the commitment of former Colorado State cornerback Rashad Ajayi.
Ajayi, at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, took an official visit to Morgantown this week and saw enough to effectively end his recruitment and commit to the Big 12 program.
“I committed to West Virginia,” he said.
A four-year starter with the Rams, the Atlanta native appeared in 37 games and started a total of 35 of those. The Mountaineers needed experience in the secondary and Ajayi provides that playing over 2,000 snaps at the college level during the course of his career.
Ajayi also took an official visit to California but ultimately decided to spend his final season in Morgantown and will fill a major need of the program in the process.
A graduate transfer, Ajayi will have one season remaining in his career and has amassed 77 tackles, 16 pass breakups and an interception over the course of his career.
Overall, Ajayi is the 10th transfer addition for West Virginia this offseason and is the second cornerback to pick the program although Murray State transfer Marcis Floyd was moved to safety in the spring.
The Mountaineers needed to find a piece in the secondary to fill out the roster and this certainly addresses that need. The program now has one remaining scholarship in the 2022 class.
The addition of Ajayi gives the Mountaineers six scholarship cornerbacks for this coming year. He brings experience to accompany the potential of the younger options in the room and brings more overall flexibility at the position for the coaches to work with moving forward.
Ajayi is expected to enroll in the near future and will join a cornerback room that outside returning starter Charles Woods is looking for more proven commodities.
The Mountaineers have been highly successful filling needs through the transfer portal and Ajayi is just another step in that process as we move toward the 2022 season.
