Ira E. “Buck” Varner, 80, of Jakes Run died Monday, May 16, 2022, at his residence.
He was born March 18, 1942, at Pentress, a son of the late Charles Varner and Goldie Brewer Varner.
Buck retired from Peabody Coal Company, Federal #2 Mine, with 35 and a half years of service and retired as a lamp man. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1570 of Fairmont.
Surviving is his wife, Geraldine “Gerry” Tennant Varner; siblings, Derle Ray Varner, of Jakes Run, Ruby Ellen Hemmer, of Jakes Run, Ethel Varner, of Rivesville, Raymond Varner, of Mount Morris, Pa., and Ralph Varner, of Jakes Run; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles J. Varner and Richard Varner; and a half sister, Betty Skadel.
At the request of the deceased, his body will be cremated. The family will have a private service at some time in the future and the cremains will be buried in the Olive Cemetery at Pentress.
The Owen-Neely Funeral Home in Blacksville is in charge of arrangements.
