John Shamma’a

Dr. John Shamma’a passed away April 23, 2022.

He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on April 19, 1953. The first born child of the late Michel Shamma’a and Agnes Ruby Somerville.

With the start of the Lebanese Civil War, John left Beirut in 1975 to pursue his medical education at Emory University, followed by George Washington University for his residency and fellowship.

In 1984 he moved to Morgantown, where he served as a gastroenterologist at West Virginia University for over 30 years.

He was an excellent physician and a wonderful teacher and mentor to all his students and fellows. He is fondly remembered by all his colleagues and mentees.

He was a passionate fisherman and enjoyed the
outdoors.

He is survived by two brothers and two nephews, whom he adored, and a slew of cousins spread around the globe as well as many friends.
