Always a good time to thank nurses
Though National Nurses Week (May 6-12) ended Thursday, the West Virginia Association of Nurse Anesthetists thanks nurses of every stripe for being the front-line providers who care for patients during their times of greatest need.
In the operating room, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), OR nurses, circulating nurses and scrub nurses work together to ensure patients’ comfort and safety.
Delivering our patients to recovery, we know they will be well cared for by vigilant PACU nurses. In the ICU, critical care nurses meet patients’ complicated health care needs. (CRNAs have walked in these nurses’ shoes, as we must acquire critical care nursing experience prior to nurse anesthesia school.)
Finally, situated in their hospital room, patients continue toward wellness under the watchful care of bedside nurses.
In the emergency room, CRNAs work with heroic ER nurses on the front lines of trauma. In OB, the labor epidurals we provide new moms assist the nurses who help bring new lives into the world. For the women and men who comprise the community of nurses, patient care is more than a livelihood, it’s an honor and privilege!

‘Night in the Park’ at Westside Senior Center
On Friday, May 6, Westside Senior Center planned a night in the park with dinner and a band.
Well, it rained but that didn’t dampen our spirits. The function was held inside the senior center instead.
At 5 p.m., Bear Lyons had all of us said the Pledge and Lord’s Prayer, and he had us say our special intentions quietly. We got our dinner: pasta, meatballs, salad, dessert, bread and drinks. The food was delicious.
At 6 p.m., the band started singing and we were all clapping. The band, Pam and Barry, sang many country songs, 50s songs and a variety of other songs. Everyone was singing, tapping their feet and dancing to the music. The band did a fantastic job. One special song was in memory of Naomi Judd. As they started to sing Love Can Build a Bridge, we were standing up, waving our hands and many of us had tears in our eyes. The song was very moving.
The volunteers came to each table with fresh bags of popcorn, all hot and buttery. The band played for two solid hours. The time had gone by so quickly. This was a most enjoyable evening at Westside Senior Center. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this fun night happen. It was most enjoyable and uplifting.
Westside Center is run by all volunteers. There are no paid employees. It has all kinds of functions to raise money to pay for anything that is needed for the seniors and the center. The volunteers are dedicated and work very hard to make the center a warm, comfortable, enjoyable place to come to relax and have fun.
Stop by and check out Westside Senior Center. The people will welcome you and you will feel right at home.
