The West Virginia Republican Party clarified a statement that appeared in a Sunday story on campaign finances for GOP incumbents David McKinley and Alex Mooney, both running for the new 2nd District U.S. House seat.
GOP chair Mark Harris said the party did not endorse Mooney. The party offers the use of its bulk mailing permit to all GOP candidates, with strict criteria, and a pro-Mooney campaign mailing with the party’s name on it was a product of that service. Harris also noted that some confusion has arisen because Mooney’s campaign spokesman is also named Mark Harris and that Harris’ name appears on Mooney campaign materials.
