The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will hold the 22nd National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The event offers free, anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at designated drop-off locations.
According to a DEA press release, drug overdose deaths are up 16 percent in the last year, claiming more than 290 lives every day.
The release stated that a report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found a majority of people who misused a prescription medication obtained the medicine from a family member or friend.
According to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office there will be five places in the county that will be accepting unused or expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Locations include:
- Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office — 116 Walnut Street, Morgantown.
- Pierpont Landing Pharmacy — 7000 Mid Atlantic Drive, Morgantown.
- Kroger Pharmacy (Suncrest Towne Centre) — 500 Suncrest Towne Centre Drive, Morgantown.
- Mon Health Medical Center — 1200 J.D. Anderson Drive, Morgantown.
- Villages at Heritage Point — 1 Heritage Point, Morgantown.
The DEA said designated locations will be able to collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Vaping devices and cartridges will be accepted provided lithium batteries are removed.
