The Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center is hosting an event this afternoon to help children learn more about how to protect themselves and others from abuse.
Raise Your Shields! is a free community event to promote body safety education to families in the community, along with surrounding communities.
Raise Your Shields! will run from 1-4 p.m. at Monongalia Child Advocacy Center (MCCAC), 909 Green Bag Road, Morgantown.
The goal is to teach children to “armor up with ways to protect yourself; learn how to use your voice and speak up with something doesn’t feel right.”
There will be an author read aloud, crafts, games and a parents session.
Diane Tarantini will read her new book, “The Brave Knight” at 2 p.m.
Kona Ice will be by at 3 p.m. and provide a free ice for each child registered by 2 p.m.
The parents’ session will be “How to Talk to Your Child About Body Safety.”
Free parking will be next door at Morgantown Printing & Binding.
As a nationally accredited child advocacy center, MCCAC promotes a coordinated response that is compassionate and efficient and puts the needs of children who are victims of abuse first.
The team of professionals includes law enforcement investigators, prosecutors, child protective service workers, medical and mental health professionals and victim advocates.
In the neutral setting at the center, team members can collaborate on strategies to aid investigators and prosecutors without causing further harm to the victims. One of the goals is to significantly increase the likelihood of a successful outcome in court and long-term healing for the child.
