MORGANTOWN — Oak Glen took an early 5-0 lead and used 13 hits to run past the Morgantown High softball team on Monday, 13-6, at Mylan Park.
In all, the two teams combined for 19 hits.
Maddie Mckay opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing teammate McKenna Calahan to score the first run of the game and her first of four runs herself. Oak Glen added another run in the inning to lead 2-0 after three inning.
Calahan was a force all game, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs and four runs scored.
The entire Golden Bear roster would see success at the plate, in fact, as all nine batters earned at least one hit against the MHS pitching duo of Mikala Rogers and Micah Wilson.
Three more runs for Oak Glen in the top of the fourth opened its lead to 5-0.
It wasn’t long after that before Breonna Marietta homered to right field to give MHS (4-6) some hope.
After earning three straight outs on defense, MHS came to bat looking to chip away at the lead. Two more runs brought the deficit to just two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
But just as quickly as the Mohigans cut into the deficit, it was extended once again. The Golden Bears would get four runs in each of the next two innings at the plate and wouldn’t look back.
Marietta and Rogers led MHS with two hits each. Rogers also earned two RBIs.
MHS head coach Lorri Lipscomb applauds the effort of her team to fight back when trailing at crucial points of games.
“It’s been something they [MHS] have done throughout the season,” she said. “Oak Glen was a very good hitting team with tons of speed. We could have given up when we were down a bunch of runs but we fought back, if we continue to do that we will win games.”
MHS will return home at 6 p.m. Thursday when it hosts Washington.
