University boys lacrosse blank Linsly in home opener

MORGANTOWN – The UHS lacrosse team defeated the Linsly High Cadets 14-0 at Mylan Pharmaceutical Stadium on Thursday.

All-around is the only way to explain the style of play in which UHS (3-1) dominated LHS (2-1). All three phases of the field were controlled by the Hawks which allowed them to cruise to a decisive victory.

“Well executed all around,” UHS head coach Brian Houk said of his team’s performance. “We have had some great practices this week which led to a great performance tonight. We dominated ground balls, physicality, and hustle plays.”

It didn’t take long for UHS to find the back of the net as Will Marshall opened the scoring just 90 seconds in. He would add another in the first, helping his team on its way to scoring five in the quarter. Nolan Danhires also scored a pair of goals in the first. The Cadets had a hard time controlling the ball and finding open shots. The Hawks defense stayed disciplined and patient, jumping at every opportunity to dispossess LHS.

“Our goalie Daniel Phillips and our defensive unit had the best performance of the year to this point,” said Houk.

UHS continued its control of the game throughout the second quarter, but didn’t continue its scoring ways, only adding two goals in the quarter. The Hawks did continue to hold their opponents scoreless however, leading 7-0 at halftime.

Out of the break, two UHS goals in quick succession built on the strong performance in the first half. Marshall and Danhires would respectively score another goal each to complete a hat-trick on the night. Danhires would finish with five goals to lead all players.

UHS senior Grant Oxley, who is responsible for taking the faceoffs for his team, had great success in the circle and allowed his team to get into their transition offense.

“Grant Oxley had the skill set to take over a game at the faceoff X any given night,” Houk said of his senior. “His high skill level allows us to dominate time of possession and get a lot of transition offense scoring opportunities. Our wing play was physical and helped out too.”

Evan Acciavatti also scored a hat trick for UHS. Conner Montgomery contributed six assists for the Hawks. Senior keeper Daniel Phillips earned a shutout and had nine saves to his name as well.

UHS doubled its score total from the first half and won the game 14-0 to hand Linsly its’ first loss of the season. The Hawks will be home again on Tuesday as they host Fairmont Senior at 7:00P.M.
