MORGANTOWN – The UHS Hawks defeated the Morgantown Mohigans 11-8 on Thursday night at Pony Lewis Field in the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
To open the game, each team’s offense had a blistering pace to it. UHS would seize control early and earn free possession but MHS keeper Emmy Hunt made a huge save from close range.
Both teams had a few shot attempts through the first five minutes of play, but it wasn’t until the 19:59 mark that the Hawks opened the scoring. They would add another 90 seconds later to take a 2-0 lead.
UHS would begin to control the ball more after the second goal but the Mohigans would get one back with 16 minutes to play. Hunt continued her bright performance between the posts, keeping her team in the game with her fourth save of the game coming on a point-blank catch.
UHS broke through for its third shortly after however, but would be matched once again as the game would see goals being traded throughout the rest of the quarter. The Hawks would go into the break with a 7-4 advantage in a half that saw many chances for both teams. UHS winning the possession battle being the difference in the game.
The Mohigans would then grab the momentum out of the locker room, scoring the first two goals of the second half, one just 30 seconds in and the next nearly seven minutes later and 18:05 left to play. MHS only trailed by one, 7-6.
The Hawks didn’t score their first goal of the half until the 16:10 mark, almost 10 minutes without a goal. It would prove to be an important one though as scoring one gave UHS the momentum it needed. One became two, two became three, and suddenly UHS led 10-6 with under 14 minutes left.
MHS grabbed a goal with a player down after a penalty call, but wouldn’t add anymore points. UHS added one more goal and would go back home with a hard-earned victory over its crosstown rival.
UHS will travel to GWHS on Friday for its next game.
