So, how’d it go in your house this morning?
Did your kid burst out the door, jumping at the chance for a truly new school day?
Maybe it was just another morning – even though a lot of those expressions in the main hallway will say otherwise.
For the first time since March 2020, Monongalia County students now have a choice concerning just how they’re going to face their classroom days.
For now, at least.
Today’s the first day of the district’s mask-only policy. If you’re a student, that means you don’t have to wear a facial covering if you don’t want to, and your parents say it’s OK.
It also means it’s perfectly fine if you do want to wear one – or your parents want you to wear one.
The call was made two weeks ago, with COVID-19 apparently on the wane in West Virginia.
As of Tuesday, the state Department of Human Resources reported 42 of West Virginia’s 55 counties in the green, including Mon.
However, another 22 state residents were reported dead of the coronavirus, between Monday and Tuesday morning.
Green or no, Mon Deputy School’s Superintendent Donna Talerico said, that means the pandemic is still unleashed – even if students are unmasked.
That’s why she wants parents to visit https://boe.mono.k12.wv.us/. That’s the district website, where a litany of things await, for moms and dads wishing to talk to their children about masks, or no.
Especially, she said, for the parents of younger children who may not know what pre-COVID life in school was like.
“We want our students to feel safe and comfortable,” she said. “No matter what decision they make.”
