West Virginia junior guard K.K. Deans will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, WVU head coach Mike Carey announced Tuesday.
A school official confirmed that Deans, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., tore her right ACL in last Saturday’s 87-54 loss against Baylor.
The play happened in the first quarter, as Deans drove to the basket. She leaped into the air and landed awkwardly on her right leg underneath the basket.
She was helped off the floor and led to the locker room. Deans later returned with her knee wrapped and was walking on her own power, but did not return to the game.
Through 18 games, Deans was the Mountaineers’ leading scorer, averaging 14.5 points, and she was also leading WVU (10-8, 3-5 Big 12) with 27 3-pointers.
Deans started every game she played for the last two seasons and she’s scored 788 points through 74 career games.
As a junior, Deans is still eligible to play the next two seasons with the Mountaineers.
As for now, WVU’s shooting guard play will rely heavily on freshman J.J. Quinerly and sophomore Savannah Samuel.
WVU plays at TCU at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and will then travel to No. 18 Oklahoma at 4 p.m. Saturday.
