WVU receives commitment from 2023 quarterback Raheim Jeter

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia has continued early momentum on the recruiting trail in the 2023 class by adding the pledge of Spartanburg (S.C.) quarterback Raheim Jeter to the class.

Jeter, at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, had become a primary target for the Mountaineers behind center after initially camping at a one-day event in late July. After an impressive performance throwing the football, Jeter was awarded a scholarship offer from the Big 12 program and things built from there.

The junior took multiple visits to Morgantown after that trip in the summer, including recently for the Texas game and then again for the junior day event Dec. 12.

The Rivals.com 3-star prospect is a significant addition to the early efforts in the 2023 class considering that work on the 2022 group isn’t even settled at this stage. But adding Jeter means the pursuit of a quarterback for the next year’s cycle is finished before it ever really had gotten started.

Jeter also collected offers from Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Auburn, and Missouri, while also receiving a high level of interest from other Power Five programs, but it ultimately came down to a pair of schools. Those two were WVU and Kentucky and ultimately the comfort level with the campus as well as the coaching staff proved the difference.

Head coach Neal Brown and quarterbacks coach Sean Reagan served as the lead recruiter for Jeter and the pair developed strong ties. A dual-threat option, Jeter tossed for 2,979 yards, 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, while completing 64% of his passes this past season in the air.

“They allow their quarterback to make decisions on his own,” Jeter said. “They’re not telling him exactly what to do so I think I’ll grow as a player there.”

Jeter became the second commitment for WVU in the 2023 class as the coaches look to get an early start on that group while still needing to fill 10 more slots for the current recruiting cycle.

Adding a quarterback along with what the Mountaineers had already picked up in York (Pa.) running back Jahiem White, who rushed for 2,100 yards and 30 touchdowns, is a good way to expedite things. The quarterback is the centerpiece in a recruiting class as even the coaching staff alluded to on signing day in regard to 2022 signee Nicco Marchiol, and now that player is in place for the next year, too.

We haven’t flipped the calendar over to January yet, but the next year has already gotten off to a fine start when it comes to the recruiting world with the Mountaineers.
