Lois Mayfield

Lois Jane Mayfield, 75, of Morgantown, passed away on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at Mon Health Medical Center with her family by her side.

She was born the fifth of eight children in Morgantown, on May 31, 1946, to the late Olive Helmick and Marple McCartney, of
Morgantown.

Lois grew up on Pleasant Hill Road and graduated from Morgantown High School in 1964. She was employed at Mylan Pharmaceuticals, working across various departments until she retired after more than 30 years. Lois raised two daughters, Christine “Christy” Lee Lillard, of Morgantown, and Jennifer “Jenny” Anne Shafer, of Portland, Ore.

Lois was a fun-loving, creative, caring woman who was deeply proud of her family, especially her daughters and four grandchildren. She was fond of snowmen decor and roosters — so much so that her grandchildren called her, “Baka,” after the favorite animal crowing sound they took to as babies, a name she adored and identified by until she passed. At her kitchen table or in the community, many enjoyed the benefits of her favorite pastimes, which included playing cards and bingo, baking, crocheting, sewing and crafting. Year after year she baked and decorated a cake for each grandchild’s birthday and designed and sewed many one-of-a-kind Halloween costumes. She will be remembered for her thoughtfulness and creativity.

Lois was preceded in death by her father and mother, Marple and Olive McCartney; sisters, Phyllis Jasper and Judy Maloney; brother-in-law, John Jr. Maloney; and son-in-law Rodney Lillard. She is survived by her daughter, Christy Lillard; granddaughter, Lacey Sullivan (Andrew); grandson, Blake Lillard (Allison); grandsons, Owen and Perry Lillard; daughter, Jenny Shafer (Doug); sister, Peggy Brooks (Jim); brother-in-law, Allen Jasper; sister, Nancy O’Neal (Ken); sister, Diana Rimlinger (Regis); brother, Ed McCartney (Elwanda); brother, Bill McCartney (Linda); niece, neighbor, caretaker and best friend, Maria Maloney; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
