Notre Dame downs Trinity in boys’ hoops; No. 4 UHS wrestling team takes down No. 3 Wheeling Park

MORGANTOWN — Wade Britton scored 18 points and Notre Dame took control early for a 70-54 victory against the Trinity boys’ basketball team.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and led the rest of the way. Dominic Zummo added 12 points for the Irish.

“We came out and did not handle their pressure well the first half and it put us into a hole we couldn’t get out of,” Trinity head coach Rick Hill said. “We talk about doing the little things, and the first half we just did not execute well on offense and we did not communicate on defense.”

Jaylon Hill led Trinity (1-2) with 15 points, while Jaiden Dobbs had 13 and Peyton Dixon added 12.

“I thought the second half we handled the pressure better and if you look at the score in 2nd half it was 32-29,” Hill said. “We eliminate the early mistakes and we are right in the game.”

The Warriors travel to Fort Frye (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

WHEELING — Corbin Turney came up with a third-period pin in the final match and fourth-ranked University High took down No. 3 Wheeling Park, 34-32.

Turney was trailing, 2-1, in the heavyweight match heading into the final period, while the Hawks trailed, 32-28, on the scoreboard.

UHS (2-0) needed a pin for the win, and that’s exactly what Turney provided in the final period.

“It was a great match,” UHS head coach Ken Maisel said. “Corbin finally was able to get a takedown and then he turned it into a pin. The place went nuts.”

Grant Oxley (126), Luca Felix (145), Hezekiah Taylor (182) and Brock Kehler (195) also recorded wins by pinfall for the Hawks and Dakota Hagedorn (160) won by major decision.

UHS will host the Nurse Pro Plus tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, which is 15-team tournament featuring schools from West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky.
