Preston Commission to publish proposed magisterial districts

KINGWOOD — The Preston County Commission approved a reworked magisterial district map for publication at its meeting on Tuesday.

There was little discussion before the three commissioners unanimously voted to publish the map for public comment as the commissioners discussed the map for almost two hours in a work session a week prior.

There will be a vote to accept and implement the proposed map at the commission’s Jan. 4 meeting.

“It’s never perfect. You know, we wrangled with it and we messed with it. Linda (Huggins, county clerk), worked with it, we had some pros that were involved. … It’s good and it’s legal and it’s better than number one,” Commissioner Dave Price said.

Huggins said both options fell within the 5% population variance that state code requires.

The proposed map has a population of 11,720 in District 1, which consists of the Bruceton Mills, Hazelton, Terra Alta and Alpine Lake areas. District 2 contains Kingwood, Albright and Tunnelton with a population of 10,899. District 3 has Masontown, Reedville, Newburg, Fellowsville and the Aurora areas with a population of 11,597.

The commission previously voted to publish map No. 1 at its Nov. 17 meeting before deciding to work on the map again at its Nov. 30 meeting.

In other news:

The commissioner canceled its Dec. 21 meeting. It will meet again on Dec. 28.

County offices will close at noon Dec. 23 and Dec. 31. They will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.

County Administrator Kathy Mace told commissioners the Preston County Animal Shelter received an anonymous donation for $7,258.15 for the outside cattery.
