Who’s ready for the holidays? I know I am!
I absolutely love this time of year, less for the weather and more for the community coming together to spread love and cheer. What better way to spend this holiday year than giving back to your community?
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is a great time to think about all the things you’re thankful for, from family, friends, a good job, the chance to pursue education or a trade, and even being thankful for some turkey in a couple of days.
It is important to think about all the things you have in your life. But while you ponder that, remember those who may be less fortunate — those who are spending the holidays alone, on the streets, in a shelter or maybe even those who can’t afford a turkey. I love the holidays because it brings people together in their communities. What ways can you give back to the community you live in?
Growing up, I was often told that the world is my oyster, I could do anything I wanted, anything I set my mind to. As the years went on, I realized that it doesn’t necessarily mean I can eat as many cupcakes as possible or stay out and play past curfew. It meant something deeper. You can have all the money in the world, but if you have no one to share it with what all is it really worth?
There is something to value in your life and it’s not money, it’s the minds and hearts of those around you that you impact in some way. So let the world be your oyster, let yourself be the main character of your own story, but this main character will always know that the time spent helping out a fellow human will be the most valuable time of her life.
There are so many ways to give back to your community. Whether through service or donations, the impact a small token can have is all the difference in the world you may not even see or realize.
Recently, I did some volunteer work at a dog shelter and at Coopers Rock. Both are very taxing on the heart and body. I can honestly say that there is no bigger reward than lending a hand, to know you are doing something for something so much bigger than yourself. Your life is temporary, but the legacy you leave behind can live through the ages.
This holiday season when you’re thinking about all the things you’re grateful for, remember how you can give back and spread those feelings all around. Donate to a toy or turkey drive. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Make blankets for your local church, drop off cans to a food pantry, etc. The possibilities to spread that holiday cheer are endless.
