James Turner

James Roy “Jim” Turner, 72, of Independence, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1949 in Grafton, the son of the late James and Doris (Thorne) Turner.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and great-uncle. Jim was also a proud veteran, serving in the Vietnam War for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He loved his wife, his son, daughter-in-law and his grandchildren very much. Known as “Pappy,” he was a beloved uncle and great-uncle to many families and adored his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Jim worked hard for many decades in the mining and heavy construction industry before his retirement in 2011. In addition to hard work, he loved being outdoors and farming his property.

Jim is survived by wife of 48 years, Deloris (Sisler) Turner; son, James Turner Jr. and wife Joni; and two grandchildren, Ethan and Sophia Turner.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen Turner, and a younger brother, Michael Turner.

Friends and family may call at the Field Funeral Home in Masontown, from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, with his nephew, Scott Cress officiating. Burial services will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown. Military rites will be conducted by the Preston County Honor Guard.

Due to COVID-19, safety precautions will be taken, the social distancing six-foot rule will be suggested and all guests who prefer to wear a mask are welcome to do so.
