BUCKHANNON — The University football team took care of business Friday night, knocking off Buckhannon-Upshur 63-6 to remaining undefeated at 7-0.
It was another impressive performance offensively for the Hawks, with a balanced passing and running attack. Quarterback Chase Edwards had 194 yards and three touchdowns through the air, while Daminn Cunningham — more on him in a bit — led the way with two catches for 78 yards, including a 77-yard score. Elija Jackson has four catches for 76 yards, and Sage Clawges had one for 43.
On the ground, Colin McBee had 69 yards on just four carries. As a team, UHS ran for 130 yards.
Defensively, the Hawks were even more spectacular. The Buccaneers were only able to muster 32 passing yards on just two completions. B-U also averaged less than three yards per carry on 34 attempts.
Cunningham had a special night, especially on special teams. He had two punt returns — 53 yards and 55 yards — for touchdowns, and also had a 68-yard kickoff return for a score to add to his resume.
Overall, the Hawks just wanted to survive and advance.
“Just put it in the rearview mirror,” UHS head coach John Kelley said. “We outmatched them a little bit, which is going to happen. They’re young. A little surprised that our kick returns were able to be so successful, and that kind of made it ugly real fast. We were fortunate, we subbed early, we tried to get everybody in. Didn’t want the score to be that way, but (we’ll) take it and move on. We’ve got to get ready for the next one.”
The next one is another road game, this time at Preston next Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Kingwood.
