Senate conforms its Congressional map to House version, sends bill to House; delays action on Senate map for a day

CHARLESTON – State Senate redistricting action was relatively limited on Wednesday.

Senators approved amending their Congressional district map bill – SB 3003 – to conform to the House map in HB 302, then approved it in a 30-2 vote.

Sen. Mike Caputo, D-Marion, voted no. He’d previously expressed his objections to The Dominion Post. There are 18 counties that are considered economically distressed, and the proposed map includes 15 of them in the southern 2nd District.

He would prefer an east-west district split to get a mix of struggling and successful counties in each and inspire the office holders to strive to make their entire districts strong, he said.

The Senate sent SB 3033 to the House where it was read a first time and is on second reading on Thursday. HB 302 is on third reading with amendments pending.

The Senate’s senatorial district map bill, SB 3034, was on third reading on Wednesday but was laid over until Thursday pending an amendment to be offered for consideration. That amendment wasn’t available for viewing Wednesday evening.
