He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Frances Kay Bragg Slaughter; son, Lloyd Walter Slaughter; his brothers, Howard, Harry and Herman; and sister, Helen Basham. Lloyd is survived by his second wife, Marilynn, and children, Catherine Slaughter, of Plano, Texas, Craig Slaughter and wife Carla, of Charleston, Jack Slaughter and wife April, of Cary, N.C., and Daniel Slaughter and husband Stephan Blachowski, of San Francisco; niece, Gail Bragg Mullet, of Columbus, Ohio, whom he considered a daughter; grandchildren, Stuart, Kayla and husband Jake Weigel, Savannah, Austin, Angelina, Jay, Drew and Sam; stepchildren, Sara Loughney, of Morgantown, Helen Haller Martell and husband Rodney, of Norfolk, Va., and Paul Haller and wife Kelley Gresh, of Pittsburgh.

Lloyd graduated from Dunbar High School in 1943 Summa Cum Laude and enlisted in the Naval ROTC program. The Naval ROTC sent him to Cornell University, where he majored in electrical engineering. Because of World War II, he attended Cornell year-round and graduated in 1946. When the war ended, he was released by the Navy and returned home to Dunbar. He was hired by Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical) in Charleston in 1947, where he worked for 37 years. After taking early retirement from Union Carbide, he moved to a new career as a financial planner with Wheat First Securities in Charleston.

He and Kay Bragg were married in 1952 and raised five children. He had a strong enduring faith and served in many positions as a lay leader for E.K. Perrow Presbyterian Church in Cross Lanes. He and Kay moved to Morgantown in 1987 so she could attend the WVU Law School. They both became active members of First Presbyterian Church in Morgantown where he again was elected as an elder, sang in the choir and served on several committees. He was also a member of the Morgantown Rotary Club. Kay tragically died in a car accident in 1992.

In 1997 he married Marilynn Haller. They bought land and built a home looking over Cheat Lake in 1999 where they welcomed family and friends, especially on WVU football weekends. He designated his body to the WVU Human Registry and will be cremated and laid to rest at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.

A celebration of life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, followed by a pie and ice cream reception. Masks will be required. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lloyd’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium, 456 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505.
