KINGWOOD — The Preston County Waste Authority held a brief meeting Wednesday evening.
Don Smith, who represents the Preston County Commission on the authority, discussed the possibility of purchasing five 32-gallon collapsible bins to be used in different locations to collect recyclables during the Buckwheat Festival.
Smith said he spoke with members of the Kingwood Rotary Club about the bins.
“They were receptive to the idea and have volunteers willing to empty the bins,” he said. “They would only have to be emptied twice a day and could be taken directly to the recycle center.”
Jay Sowers, county litter officer, said he would also be willing to empty them.
No action was taken.
In other business, Sowers said he handed out numerous tickets for properties that need to be cleaned up.
“I don’t know how many I’ve written,” he said. “The health department has more authority with trailer parks than me and law enforcement. One person was charged $678, and that’s cheap; another $2,000 could have been added on.”
Sowers said he was going to speak with county Administrator Kathy Mace to see if there is a cheaper way to contact individuals about their properties.
“It cost a lot of money to send out 143 certified letters,” he said. “I’m not going to spend $700 to send them out. There has to be another way to do this.”
There was no further discussion.
Smith said the 2022 e-cycle grant was approved for $9,500. He said $7,500 of the grant is to be used for contracted services, and $2,000 for advertising and educational material handouts.
