Della Loughry

Della Mae Loughry, 90, of Terra Alta, passed peacefully on Monday, Oct. 4,2021, at Garrett Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md., with family by her side.

She was born on Oct. 3, 1931, in Kingwood, a daughter of the late Oliver Jackson Thomas and Iva Pearl (Reckart) Thomas.

She loved her family and was Mom or Grandma to many. She worked hard all of her life, from the time she was a child and helping her parents, aunts and uncles with all kinds of chores like milking cows, cooking, cleaning and sewing. She went on to raise her own children and many foster kids. She loved to feed everyone and was known far and wide for her fabulous buckwheat cakes, serving them in her home with all the fixings, as well as for the Fire Department, church and schools. She was still working at the Terra Alta Stockyard on Fridays and was often seen mowing her front yard, watering her flowers and tending to her plants.

She will be greatly missed by many, including her six sons, Darwin “Butch” Loughry, of Albright, Roger “Dano” Loughry and Tammy, of Thornton, Eddie “Moose” Loughry and Connie, of Terra Alta, Ronnie “Monk” Loughry and Lisa, of Bruceton Mills, Jimmy “Jimbo” Loughry and Lois, of Kingwood, and Randy “Stacks” Loughry and Missy, of Terra Alta; a daughter, Sheila “Sis” Loughry, of Reedsville; a sister, Wilma Holmes and Lester, of Grafton; a special foster son, Eddie Simmons; and a special “son,” Bill Byrd and Patsy, of Florida. Her eight children gave her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She could tell you each one’s birthdate by heart and kept them all written in her bible. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A special thank you to her wonderful friends, Patty Pennington and Delores Pomeroy, for their love and companionship through the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Robert Clayton “Porky” Loughry Sr., in 2001; her son, Robert Clayton “Bones” Loughry Jr., in 2007; and brothers, sisters and numerous family members.

To honor Della’s wishes, there will be no public viewing. A private family graveside service will be held. She will be laid to rest at the Terra Alta Cemetery next to her husband. The family has entrusted the arrangements to the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta.
