COLUMN: Stretch, but don’t stretch yourself too thin

If you haven’t heard this today, you’re doing a great job. Our toughest critics are often ourselves — in fact, we will be the first  to tell ourselves all the negatives before getting to the positives.

This is a message for all those trying something new, finishing their degree, working to get  promotions, tackling family life and social life at the same time, finding the balance while standing on one leg and juggling: You are doing a great job.

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by everything on your plate? It’s like the days keep on passing by and you haven’t caught your breath since that last Friday in August, but somehow October is sneaking around the corner. Being overwhelmed is normal, but stretching yourself out to try and do everything is not necessary. Sometimes we don’t give ourselves the credit we deserve, or we feel like not doing enough is somehow a failure. This is malarkey!

You deserve better, you deserve a break, you deserve to sit on a couch, watch your favorite show with your favorite snack, and not feel guilty. Being an adult is hard, being an adult through a pandemic even more so — having a family, having a job, going to school, being in organizations, fighting to stay afloat in that internship, or that relationship, having to take care of pets, the list is infinite.

As huge as this list is, so is the amount of times you should step back and  be grateful for how far you’ve come as a person, everything you’ve accomplished and continue to accomplish, everything your body has taken you through and how much your mind has overcome.

Breathe. You are in every way as deserving of a break, a hug, or some of your time as anyone else. I think focusing on recharging our bodies is just as vital as recharging that phone every night. We religiously check our phones, emails, laptops, socials, but do we ever check up on ourselves?

As important as it is to brush your teeth at night, it’s important to reward yourself in some way every day — to thank your mind, body and spirit for tackling the world.

Whether that’s watching an episode of the Real Housewives and not telling anyone, or getting that soda you’re craving, you deserve the best.

You deserve a break.
