Leonard Earl McCartney, 95, of Morgantown, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, at Sundale Nursing Home. He was born on May 2, 1926, in Morgantown, the son of the late Rev. Everett McCartney and Delphia (Dotson) McCartney.
He was a long-time member of Mount View Free Methodist Church and retired from Sterling Faucet after 40 years. During that time, he served as mayor of Morgantown for two years and Morgantown city council for 16 years. In his pastime, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, antiquing and riding his ATV.
Earl was survived by his son, Frederick McCartney and wife Nancy, and his daughter, Joyce (McCartney) Turpen and husband John, all of Morgantown; grandchildren: Kimberly Rogers and husband, Keith, of Independence, Jerry Daft Jr. and wife Stephanie, of Terra Alta, Travis McCartney and wife Melissa, of Redding, Calif., Steed McCartney and wife Melanie, of Lutz, Fla., Jarret McCartney, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Daniel Turpen, of Morgantown; sisters, Thelma Gibson-Foor and Pauline Shahan, both of Morgantown; and several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Sylvia Ruth McCartney; daughter, Janet (McCartney) Daft; brother, Marple McCartney; brother, Carl McCartney; brother, Harold McCartney; sister, Hazel McCartney; daughter-in-law, Brenda McCartney; and son-in-law, Jerry Daft.
Although guests are invited to come visit, the family requires that all wear masks and social distancing be practiced.
Friends and family will be received at Morgantown Bible Church, 1407 Brookhaven Road, Morgantown, from 11 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 18. Private family funeral services will follow with Pastor Jim Cooley officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
