Ellen Galloway

Ellen Louise Galloway, 94, of Brandonville, and more recently of Morgantown, passed away Tuesday morning, Aug. 31, 2021, in Morgantown.

The daughter of the late Ralph and Louise Norton, she was born on Dec. 9, 1926, in Zanesville, Ohio and was raised in Akron, Ohio.

Ellen met and married her husband, Bud, in Akron, Ohio, and then settled in Brandonville in 1949. Along with raising their three children, they loved to travel and garden in their spare time. Like Bud’s mother and father, Ellen served as substitute postmaster and later followed Bud as postmaster of the Brandonville post office until she retired on July 4, 1989. The kids loved her because she always gave them a half stick of gum when they came in to get their mail.

Ellen was a very active member of the Brandonville and Bruceton Mills community. She was a key contributor at school and church functions, a member of numerous local social groups and friendship clubs, an election polling place worker and a regular volunteer at the Bruceton Mills Food Pantry. Upon Bud’s passing, she joined the North Preston County Senior Center. Her love for her friends and the activities at the Senior Center became an invaluable part of her life. In November 2019, Ellen moved to the Harmony Retirement Community in Morgantown.

She is survived by two sons, Gary Galloway, of Oakland, Md., and James Galloway (Sally), of Hattiesburg, Miss.; four grandchildren, Meredith Billington and Leslie Billington, of Rockville, Md., Jason Galloway (Amber), of Fairmont, and Adam Galloway, of Hattiesburg, Miss.; and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Rosa, of Fairmont, and Jarrett Galloway, of Fairmont.

In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Verl “Bud” Galloway, of Brandonville; her daughter, Marsha Billington, of Rockville, Md.; and two brothers.

Visitation will be at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home in Brandonville-Bruceton Mills, from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, and from 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 3, until the 11 a.m. funeral service officiated by Pastor Barry Adkins. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery at Laurel Run, Pisgah Road. Because of the increase in the COVID virus, all attending are requested to wear masks during the visitation and funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ellen’s memory be made to the North Preston County Senior Center at P.O. Box 72, Bruceton Mills, (304)-379-1165.
