MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia football program had a busy summer on the recruiting trail.
The Mountaineers added a dozen commitments since the calendar flipped to June, and each of those visited Morgantown at some point during the summer months.
The 2022 recruiting class now sits with 17 commitments overall and is ranked inside the top 20 nationally according to Rivals.com, but the work is not quite done.
WVU is still involved with multiple targets that are expected to make their college decisions in the coming weeks, which could elevate the program even further up the standings.
Cincinnati Moeller wide receiver Brandon White is set to make his college choice Aug. 27 and the Mountaineers are one-of-four schools remaining along with Kentucky, Indiana and Purdue. White is a speedster being timed in the 4.2’s in the 40-yard dash at multiple camps this summer, and earned an offer from the Mountaineers after a private workout in June.
The Rivals.com 3-star then returned to campus July 29 and left impressed with the program and their plan for him at the inside receiver spot.
After White, the Mountaineers are still heavily involved with Winter Garden (Fla.) Foundation Academy defensive end Bryan Thomas. The son of the former Jets pass rusher of the same name, he took an official visit to Morgantown from June 24-26, and has WVU on top with South Carolina as he approaches a decision.
Thomas plans to take an official visit to South Carolina the first weekend of the college football season and then is expected to make his choice between the two. For now, the Mountaineers are in a good spot considering how impressed he left campus after his stay in Morgantown.
On top of that pair the Mountaineers remain involved with a pair of four-star prospects that officially visited campus this summer in Miami (Fla.) Central linebacker Wesley Bissainthe and Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake offensive lineman Trent Ramsey. Both were impressed with their experience on campus but there is a long list of suitors still fighting for their services.
Bissainthe has already taken official visits to WVU, Miami and Penn State, while Ramsey has also been to California and Indiana, on top of his stop in Morgantown.
There are others, as well, but even with the class mostly in place there are still some big fish out there that could send the class to heights that the program hasn’t seen in quite some time.
A lot of heavy lifting is done, but in recruiting the book is never closed and a big summer has the potential to get even bigger if the cards fall the right way for the program.
