Samuel Newman

Samuel R. Newman, 85, of Kings Park, N.Y., passed away to be with the Lord on Aug. 15th, 2021, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born July 16, 1936, in Westover, son of the late Everett Morris Newman and Isabel Irene Wolfe.

He is survived by a sister, Nancy Moore; a brother, Dan Newman; a son, Allan Newman; daughter-in-law, Marianna Newman; granddaughter, Jessica Newman; and grandson, James Newman and wife Cassidy Buechler. He is preceded in death by Everett Moris “Lee” Jr.

Sam entered the USAF on May 5, 1955. He was married to Velma Virginia Christy on Dec. 17, 1955. Velma passed on July 18, 2010. Sam was honorably discharged on May 8, 1959. He was then hired by the Federal Aviation Administration on May 25, 1959, to work as a radar air traffic controller in Hangar 11 located at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He retired from the FAA in December of 1999.

He was an active member of the Smithtown United Methodist Church since 1966. Sam became a lay speaker in 1982, and then a lay minister in May of 2013. He was a dedicated patron of the Smithtown Historical Society. He was a passionate member of the Kings Park Golf Association. Sam was a pillar of support for the Food Pantry at the Smithtown Methodist Church.


A memorial service will be held at the Clayton Funeral Home located at 25 Meadow Road, Kings Park, N.Y. between 2 and 4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22. In lieu of flowers to honor Sam’s request, send donations to: ATTN: Food Pantry, Smithtown United Methodist Church 230 E. Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787.
