On Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, Fredrick Daniel Powell, 67, loving son and father, passed. Dan was born Dec. 8, 1953, in Morgantown, to Fred and Wanda Powell. Dan was a graduate of Morgantown High and later in life received a degree from West Virginia University. He was a jack of all trades but sought to serve his community in some capacity. He worked as a deputy for the Monongalia County Sheriff, was a MECCA 911 dispatcher and at Davis Lynch glass factory. However, his proudest accomplishment was his 13 years of service as a City of Morgantown firefighter.
Dan was a loving father to Wendy Hall (Jason), Victoria Bruce (Scott), Matthew Powell and Margot Powell. He loved his grandchildren dearly, sharing pictures and achievements of Layla Jane Powell, Cooper Hall and Teagan and Barrett Bruce. He was also survived by his sister, Pamela Moore and husband Byron, as well as his nephews.
Dan (or Freddie as he went by in his younger years) had a passion for karaoke, sports, card collecting and good times with close friends. Johnny Nicholson and Andy Stahley were not just true friends but woven into the family fabric by Dan.
Dan’s uncontested love was, and has always been, the West Virginia Mountaineers. He bled blue and gold. Even when traveling, he would manage to find fellow fans. He was larger than life and always found a way to crack a joke to make you smile. He was quick-witted, funny and the tip of the spear when it came to WVU sports.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Hastings Funeral Home. A viewing will be held at Hastings Funeral Home, from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20. In honor of Dan’s love of WVU, please feel free to wear WVU attire and dress comfortably.
A private family gathering and inurnment will be held at a later date.
