MORGANTOWN — From Mothman and The Flatwoods Monster, to Sheepsquatch and Ogua, West Virginia is purported to have its fair share of cryptids lurking in its hills. And the Cryptid Bash, set for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 7 at Morgantown Art Party, 218 Walnut St., looks to celebrate these spooky, mythological beasts.
Presented by Mothboys Podcast and Morgantown Art Party, the new free, family friendly event will feature 30 artists and creators in the cryptid and paranormal scene, who will sell and show off their works. Some of the vendors include Appalachian Huntsman, Casey’s Cauldron, Elisha Rush Art, and WV Cryptids and Strange Encounters.
“This event came to be because of our love for cryptids, West Virginia, and all things strange,” said Michael Schang, co-host of Mothboys Podcast. “We wanted to throw a big, fun, free event that can showcase artists of all kinds.”
Small Town Monsters will show three of its films, including “The Mothman of Point Pleasant,” “The Mothman Legacy” and “The Flatwoods Monster: A Legacy of Fear.”
Greenbrier Valley Brewing Co. will serve some of its craft beers, including its Mothman Black IPA.
There will also be a drawing to help benefit Morgantown Art Party, a nonprofit organization that helps local musicians and artists.
Cryptid Bash will have live music from J. Hatfield and Captain Catfeesh, starting at 2:30 p.m.
“I think that it’s going to be a great event, and I’m really excited about it,” said Jillian Kelly, founder of Morgantown Art Party. “I’ve always loved cryptids, and I love that it has become such a big thing.”
Kelly mentioned that Morgantown Art Bar, 268 High St., will have food and host some of the other events for Cryptid Bash, such as guest speakers and movies from Small Town Monsters.
“Hopefully, it’ll be something we can do every year,” Kelly said.
The Dominion Post, which sponsors the bash, and will raffle off a basket and giving out newspaper subscriptions.
