A seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 68 sent two people, including an off-duty police officer, to the hospital.
The Westover officer was helping a motorist involved in a crash on I-68 Eastbound near the 3.5 mile marker, according to Cpl. J.G. Baker with the West Virginia State Police. Baker said the officer might have a broken collarbone but was able to give a statement at the hospital.
Baker said a single vehicle hydroplaned and crashed into the guardrail and the off-duty officer stopped to help. A tractor trailer came over the hill, the driver saw the crash, put the brakes on and slid into two vehicles, knocking one of them into the officer. Behind that tractor trailer, a car slowed down, another tractor trailer hit a truck and pushed it into another vehicle, he said.
“Slow down when it rains,” Baker said. “You can’t hydroplane if you’re not speeding.”
The crash was reported to MECCA 911 at 1:57 p.m. and the interstate reopened at 3:01 p.m., a 911 supervisor said.
Mon EMS, Brookhaven and Clinton District volunteer fire departments, Morgantown Fire Department, Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, and Morgantown Police Department also responded to the crash.
