Unlucky 13: Swiger holds tight in seventh inning, Clarksburg edges Morgantown 3-2

Morgantown Post 2 and Clarksburg Post 13 went toe-to-toe until the final strikeout Wednesday night at Mylan Park, but Post 13’s Baron Swiger held tight on the mound to keep Post 2 at bay for the 3-2 win.

Post 13 bought real estate on the board first with a solo run in the second, but neither team could find the board again until Post 2 tied it in the bottom of the fourth on a Tony Marsh liner to left field to put in Zach Owens.

Tanner Cook put Post 13 back ahead in the following inning, however, with a home run on a 1-1 count past the center field fence, giving the visitors a slight 2-1 lead.

Clarksburg found more breathing room in the sixth when Brody Byrd scored on a fielder’s choice after stealing second and third. Post 2 closed out the half inning quickly after that, and Aaron Forbes logged a home run on his first pitch during Post 2’s offensive go around, sending it deep out of center field to bring the hosts within one.

In the final inning, Jacob Spearan closed out Post 13 in three to give Morgantown one last chance at the plate to rally. Unfortunately for the hosts, the same fate awaited them as Swiger closed out the game in three-up, three-down fashion.

In total, Post 2 scored its two runs on four hits while committing three errors. Marsh, Forbes and Zach Owens led at the plate going 1 for 3.

Clarksburg registered its three runs on six hits and committed no errors. Cook led batters at the plate with a 2 for 4 night.

Swiger was credited with the win, pitching a complete game. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out five.

Zach Harman pitched 6 innings for Morgantown and took the loss. He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, struck out three, and walked four.
