The Morgantown Public Library System has decided to expand its selection of entertainment by introducing a board game and puzzle collection to its shelves.
The idea for the collection was inspired by the Games Roundtable from the American Libraries Association.
MPLS associates Amanda and Charlotte Young wrote the grant proposal for the MPLS Staff Innovation Award, which is an internal grant that encourages library staff to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.
The new collection enables families to host their own family game nights while the program has temporarily been placed on hold at the library.
According to MPLS Marketing Manager Corina Chang, 100 board games and puzzles are available now at MPLS’ Downtown and Cheat Area branches. These games and puzzles can be checked out for free like a regular library book with a restriction of one game per library card for up to three weeks.
Although the collections are unique to those two locations, patrons of other MPLS locations may request games that will be delivered to their branch. Games cannot be placed on hold or renewed.
“By adding new collections, our new board games and puzzles give people a way to explore new ideas and places and to build on the world that books create for us,” said MPLS Director Sarah Palfrey.
Interested patrons can visit the Downtown or Cheat Area MPLS branch to browse the collection in person, or they can examine the online catalog on the MPLS website.
By simply searching “board games,” patrons can review those offered by MPLS, including Battleship, Pictionary, Munchkin Shakespeare, Backgammon, Hungry Hippos and more.
