Carol Modzik

Carol Modzik, 78, of Morgantown, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021, at Sundale Nursing Home, with her sister, Irene, and nieces by her side. Carol was born in Monongalia County, the 11th child of the late Joseph Modzik and Rose Modzik, both originally from Poland.

Carol graduated from University High School at the young age of 15 with a scholarship to West Virginia University. She graduated from WVU at the young age of 19 with a degree in education and library science. She taught school for four years in Parkersburg, then returned to Morgantown to pursue her master’s degree in social work. She worked for many years with the Maternal and Infant Care Program with the health department, where she was the head social worker. Carol then moved on to Philadelphia, and was employed by the IRS. She received 10 awards while employed with the IRS for her superior and exemplary service as well as being a member of the Account Quality Training staff. She also volunteered for FEMA. She retired from the IRS and returned to Morgantown for the duration of her life.

Carol was an avid reader and had a library of her own within her home. Her books were donated to different organizations and the Morgantown Library. Her passion was her cats, whom she loved dearly. She belonged to many civic organizations and loved to be able to help people in need. She was also very involved with the Children International program for 26 years.

Carol is survived by her sisters, Irene Liberatore, of Morgantown, Jeanette Sottile, of Levittown, Pa.; and one brother, George Modzik (Sue), of Powell, Tenn; and her loving nieces and spouses, that were available if she ever needed help and whom she always knew she could depend on, Rosann Hardin (Richard), Cynthia Straface (David), Victoria Cather (Carl) and Diane Lofstead (Dave). She loved going to their homes for all holiday dinners to enjoy spectacular displays of food. They were all daughters of Irene.

She is also survived by her loving neices, Karen Modzik and Kathy Houser (Keith), of Morgantown, and her loving nieces and nephews that lived out of town, Elaine McKay, Woodbridge, Va., Alice Lattanzio, of Lebanon, N.J., Anita Giampietro, of Lancaster, Pa., Beth Coode, of Jekyll Island, S.C., Debbie Schmadel, of South Carolina, Ann Watson, of Hillard Ohio, Cathy Brazis, of Chardon, Ohio, Andy Modzik, of Stokesdale, N.C., Thomas Osecky, of Aldie Va., Dr. Dan Osecky, of Ft. Collins, Colo., Jason Modzik, of Frederickburg, Va., Dr. James Sottile, of Springfield, Mo., and Derek and Dave Sottile, of Levittown, Pa; along with many relatives in Krakow, Poland and 12 great-nieces and 13 great-nephews.

According to her wishes, she is being cremated. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, at 10 a.m., June 26, with Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati, STD VE as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.
