John Marshall takes Game 1 in Region I tournament, Hawks face elimination on the road

Sports@DominionPost.com

After inclement weather sent John Marshall and University home Monday, halting Game 1 of the teams’ three-game Region I series, the Monarchs returned to Mylan Park Tuesday afternoon to defeat the Hawks, 2-0.

Neither team could find a run for the first three innings of the game, but JM broke the goose egg with a Dori Kins ground out to first base, allowing Tessa Wise to score. The final run of the game came an inning later when Shelby Koontz’s bunt sent Paytyn Tucker across home plate.

UHS was unable to cut the deficit in the fifth when lightning sent the teams packing, and neither team would find a run in the Tuesday pickup.

Autumn Stemple pitched the entire game, allowing two runs on two hits. She struck out nine and walked one.

Kadence Pettit led JM in the circle, allowing four hits but combining with her defense to keep the Hawks’ scoreless. She struck out nine.

The Hawks next travel to Glen Dale to face the Monarchs in Game 2 at 5 p.m. A win for the Hawks would bring Game 3 to Morgantown on Thursday. A win for JM will put them in the Class AAA state tournament.
