Elks Lodge 411 will present a Flag Day Ceremony at 6:30 p.m.  Monday at the Elks, 1138 Chestnut Ridge Road, Morgantown.

Elks 411 Exalted Ruler Harry Taylor invites the public to attend the annual Flag Day celebration.

Members of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 306 will conduct a flag retirement ritual in the parking lot immediately following the ceremony.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States, which took place  May 30, 1916.

June 14 was officially established as Flag Day that year by a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson.

Flag Day is celebrated by every Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in the United States. To commemorate Flag Day, each Lodge presents a program about the history of the flag and the importance to the nation and its people.

The solemn flag retirement ritual, conducted by the Vietnam Veterans, provides for proper disposal of faded, worn or weather-beaten flags. When a flag is tattered or otherwise unsuitable for flying, burning is an acceptable way to discard of an American flag.
