Appalachian Gallery provides handmade crafts and custom framing

MORGANTOWN — Appalachian Gallery has been providing the Morgantown community with custom framing and crafts since 1987. It is the area’s largest custom framing studio, gallery and gift shop and specializes in arts and crafts by West Virginia artists.

Penelyn Van Orange and Laurie Nugent have owned the gallery, at 270 Walnut St., since 2004.

“We are proud to have remained a relevant source for selling the work of local artists and craftspersons for decades,” Van Orange said.

Appalachian Gallery carries Blenko Glass Co., Ron Hinkle Glass and handmade glass by local artists, as well as pottery, photography and stained glass, puppets, folk toys, woodworks, prints and paintings.

It is also a reliable source to find art and crafts made by artists and artisans of West Virginia. Some of these items include hand-blown glass, jewelry, hand-quilted and handknit items, books, cards and handcrafted toys.

The gallery offers more than 2,000 frame styles, as well as the an extensive line of framing services including shadowbox framing, specialty matting, canvas cleaning, glass replacement and frame repair.

Everything in Appalachian Gallery is made in the state, and custom framing and stained glass are built in-house.

“We pride ourselves on showcasing original West Virginia products and supporting local craftspeople,” Van Orange said.

Van Orange has over 30 years’ experience as a picture framer and artist. She also specializes in custom design, set design and set construction, which factor into her as an expert custom picture framer.

Nugent has over 40 years’ experience in custom framing as well and came up with the gallery’s name, meant to focus on West Virginia art and artisans and as a showcase for local talent.

Appalachian Gallery also participates in Downtown Morgantown’s Monthly Arts Walk. The next Arts Walk is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 12.

The gallery is at 270 Walnut St., in the historic Sandcastle building, and is open on weekdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
