MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Former WVU baseball standout Matt Yurish was named the head coach at Fairmont State on Monday.
Yurish was the head coach at Alderson Broaddus for the past five seasons.
“We are pleased to welcome Matt Yurish to Fairmont State University as the next head coach of our baseball program,” Fairmont State athletic director Greg Bamberger said. “Matt’s vision and plan for the Fairmont State baseball program aligned with our criteria during our national search. Our administration and the entire search committee are excited for the future of Falcon baseball under his leadership.”
Yurish was a standout pitcher with the Mountaineers from 2005-08, where he led WVU in strikeouts in each of his last three seasons.
Following his college career, Yurish also played professionally with the Washington Wild Things in the Frontier League.
“I would like to thank President Mirta Martin, Director of Athletics Greg Bamberger and the entire athletics department at Fairmont State for allowing me the chance to lead the baseball program,” said Yurish. “Fairmont State is a wonderful institution with great support from its community. My family and I are very excited to become a part of it. I’m ready to meet the guys and get to work as we prepare for the 2021-22 season.”
During his tenure at AB, Yurish had two 20-win seasons and made three postseason appearances and coached 19 all-conference standouts.
At WVU, Yurish compiled a record of 17-12 with a career ERA of 4.40. He started 42 career games and recorded 247 strikeouts. He was once named national Pitcher of the Week in April of 2006.
He and his wife, Emilee, have a son, Wyatt. The family currently resides in Bridgeport.
