Mary Ellen Smith, 84, passed away on May 23, 2021. She was born June 3, 1936, in Halleck, to the late Cecil Camden and Bessie Lee Keener.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Smith. They shared eight children, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mary was a homemaker while her children were young, and later, she and Jim owned and operated J&M Machine.
Mary was a member of Newburg Chapter 143 Order of The Eastern Star. Throughout her lifetime, she was an active church supporter of Halleck United Methodist, Community United Methodist Church, and Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Mary will be remembered most for her quiet demeanor, her strong values, and the unwavering support and encouragement that she provided unconditionally to her family.
Her children include Mike (and Diane) Richardson, J.P. (and Mercy) Smith, Pat (and Teresa) Richardson, Jeff (and Judy) Richardson, Eric (and Lena) Smith, Shiela (and Ricky) Fernandez, Bryan (and Ami) Smith and Lisa (and Dan) Quesenberry.
Mary is preceded in death by her brother, Forney Sherman Keener Sr.; her sister, Lillian Lorina; and her first husband, Charles Richardson. She is survived by her brother, William “Bill” Keener.
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations to Sundale Resident Fund, 800 J.D. Anderson Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505, or West Virginia Caring Hospice, 3437 University Ave. Morgantown, WV 26505.
The family will receive friends at the Fred L. Jenkins Chapel of Prayer, from 10 a.m., Saturday, May 29, until time of services at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest at the Halleck Cemetery.
