MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After putting up a single run in the bottom of the first inning, University exploded for 15 back-to-back runs in the second and third innings to close its meeting with Preston, 16-0, in three innings.
Meysa Heitmann led the Hawks at the plate with a 3 for 4 performance, batting in four. Eryn Yocum, Hannah Brown, Alyssa Spadafore and Lindsey Vorndran each had two RBI, while Anna Voris and Autumn Stemple each batted in one. In total, UHS’s 16 runs came off 16 hits.
Though ending early, Stemple pitched a no-hitter. She struck out eight.
Alexis Miller and Cayli Maxwell split time in the circle, with Miller pitching two innings. She allowed 10 hits, eight runs, and struck out one. Maxwell pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing six hits, eight runs and three walks. She struck out one.
No Knights batter saw more than one at bat.
Baseball
University 5, Buckhannon-Upshur 2
University kept tacking runs on the board while holding off Buckhannon-Upshur until the sixth inning, coming away with the 5-2 win on Thursday.
University put up two runs, one each in the second and third inning, and added two more in the bottom of the fifth to build a 4-0 lead over the Buccaneers. B-U added two in the top of the sixth to cut the Hawks’ lead in half, but UHS sent the Buccaneers back to field, put up one more run in the bottom of the frame, and held off any comeback attempt in the final frame.
Noah Braham led the Hawks at the plate, going 2 for 4 and driving in two runs. In total, UHS totaled five runs on 10 hits. Further, Buckhaannon-Upshur totaled its two runs on five hits. Each team had two errors.
Casey Smith pitched all seven innings for UHS to pick up the win, allowing the Buc’s hits and runs while striking out nine.
Three pitchers saw the mound for B-U. Issac Lane pitched 2 1/3 innings to take the loss, allowing three hits, two runs and two walks. He struck out two.
Tennis
Morgantown girls’ 7, Buckhannon-Upshur 0
Morgantown ended the regular season with a dominant 7-0 win over Buckhannon-Upshur Thursday, making a statement going into the Regional tournament.
No. 1 Cat Wassick, No. 2 Amy Lu, No. 3 Kassie Regules and No. 4 Samantha Carver all defeated their opponents 8-0 in singles action, and the No. 1 and 2 doubles teams followed suit with shutouts of their own.
Amber Li and Sophia Mascari were the only ones to surrender points, defeating Lainey Rowan and Tori Adams, 8-2.
Morgantown (15-2) now has a week to rest from game action and get ready for the postseason.
Morgantown boys’ 6, Buckhannon-Upshur 1
Morgantown blew out Buckhannon-Upshur, 6-1, behind a strong showing in both singles and doubles.
No. 1 Ataes Aggarwal, No. 3 Adien Aggarwal and No. 4 Bennett Hall all won their singles matches, with Adien Aggarwal taking his into a tiebreaker, defeating Hank Phillips, 9-8. No. 2 Max Phillips-Hartley dropped his singles match against Caden Andrick, 8-2.
In doubles, MHS (16-2) swept the Buccaneers, although No. 3 Dake Lasala and Doug Liu took their match into a tiebreaker. They defeated Garrett Materne and Bailey Cleavenger 7-0 in the tiebreaker to win, 9-8.
Up next, Morgantown heads to Regionals. They have a week off until Day 1 kicks off on Thursday, May 27.
