MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Noah Braham drove in six runners in Friday’s win over Brooke, as the Hawks easily cruised to a 14-2 final.
University got on the board out of the gate, putting two runs on the board in the 1st and 2nd innings. The Hawks held the Bruins to no runs through four innings, while tacking on five more through the 3rd and 4th. The Hawks put up their final five runs in the top of the 5th while allowing two runs in the bottom of the frame to close things out.
Zach Harmon pitched all five innings for UHS, allowing just two hits and two runs while striking out and walking two. Braham’s big night saw him go 3 for 4 at the plate for his six RBIs. He accounted for two of the Hawks’ 14 runs.
Softball
Oak Glen 10, University 1
The bats were alive for Oak Glen on Friday as the Golden Browns overwhelmed the Hawks, 10-1.
Oak Glen opened the meeting with a solo run in the 1st inning, and tacked on three more in the 3rd and 4th to take a substantial lead midway through. University got its first and only run in the bottom of the 5th thanks to Lindsey Vorndran, who went 1 for 3 the plate.
The Golden Bears closed the game out with six more runs in the final two frames. They totaled 13 hits and eight earned runs off Autumn Stemple – who remained in the circle all seven innings – in the victory. Sydney Brown led Oak Glen at the plate with a 3 for 5 performance and five RBIs. She logged a double and home run.
Junior Maddie McKay led Oak Glen with 12 strikeouts, only giving up three hits, two to Anna Voris and one to Vorndran. She walked six.
Nitro 2, Morgantown 1
Morgantown’s Mikala Rogers and Nitro’s Bella Savilla squared off in a pitcher’s battle Friday afternoon, both accounting for just four hits but Kerigan Moore scored on a Carly Mathes single in the top of the 3rd inning proved good enough to push the Wildcats over the Mohigans, 2-1.
Morgantown took the early lead in the bottom of the 1st when Emily Phares crossed the plate on a single to second base by Mahalie Moser, but Nitro snapped back in the 2nd when A Miller stole third and then found home on a dropped third strike.
Mathes’ single drove in Moore a frame later, and Savilla held off all Mohigans batters through the remaining four innings to secure the win.
Savilla allowed two hits and one run while striking out seven in the win. Rogers led Morgantown, allowing two hits and two runs. She struck out 13.
Girls’ lacrosse
Fairmont Senior 13, University 1
Aubrey Harrison, Morgan Rogers and Chloe Travelstead combined for 10 goals in Fairmont’s 13-1 win over University on Friday, handing UHS its fifth loss of the year.
Kendall Kirby secured the Hawks’ (4-5) lone goal, assisted by Rebecca Chmiel. Goalkeeper Lexi Starcher logged 11 saves.
Aside from her game-high four goals, Harrison led Fairmont in assists, too, with five. Keeper Sidney Apanowicz had five saves in the win.
