WHEELING, W.Va. – The Morgantown boys’ and girls’ tennis teams swept Wheeling Park in Wheeling Wednesday afternoon, as the boys overwhelmed the Patriots, 6-1, and the girls, 5-2.
The Mohigans boys’ squad swept the Patriots in singles, as Ataes Aggarwal (8-1) and Max Phillips-Hartley (8-3) cruised to easy wins, while Adien Aggarwal (9-7) and Bennett Hall (8-4) overcame surges by Ryan Quickel and Nick Trischler, respectively.
Park got their first win in the No. 3 doubles match, as Quickel and Gavin Goodrich defeated Pratham Bhanushali and Hayden Swoyer, 8-2. Ataes Aggarwal and Phillips-Hartley and Adien Aggarwal and Hall won their doubles matches, 8-1.
On the girls’ side, Cat Wassick, Sam Carver and Kassie Regules all had two victories for the Mohigans. Wassick won her No. 1 singles match, 8-3, Regules won the No. 3 singles match, 8-3, and Carver shut out her opponent in the No. 4 singles match, 8-0. Amy Lu retired her No. 2 match at 4-3, although no reason was given. MHS went on to win the No. 1 and 2 doubles match, but dropped the No. 3 match, 8-3.
Both Mohigans squads remain undefeated, and next travels to Parkersburg Saturday for a tri with Hurricane and Parkersburg.
Softball
Morgantown 4, Wheeling Park 0
Lillian Kooser led Morgantown on the mound, four batters picked up an RBI each and the Mohigans shutt out Wheeling Park Wednesday afternoon, 4-0.
Both the Mohigans and Patriots were kept off the board through 2 1/2 innings, but Morgantown’s big 3rd inning saw three runners cross home to take the lead. Park was unable to find ground and Morgantown tacked on its final run in the bottom of the 6th to pick up win No. 11 on Senior Night.
Kooser pitched all seven innings, throwing 90 pitches, allowing three hits and no runs. She struck out five and walked two.
Emily Goldcamp and Emma Phares led MHS at the plate, going 2 for 3 and 2 for 4, respectively. Phares, Mahalie Moser, Breonna Marietta and Grace Haines accounted for the team’s RBIs.
Makenna Kelley led WPHS on the mound, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out and walking two.
Lacrosse
University 7, Linsly 9
The University boys’ lacrosse team picked up its third loss of the season Wednesday, falling to Linsly, 9-7.
UHS and Linsly were locked throughout until Linsly pulled ahead in the fourth quarter with two clutch goals.
Nolan Danhires led the team with four goals, while Devin L’Hommiedieu, Peyton Turner, and Grant Oxley each had one goal. The defense had three assists, with Roberto Cortopassi leading with two and Emery Cottrell dishing the final one.
Goalkeeper Daniel Phillips had a strong showing with 12 saves.
JV Baseball
University 10, Morgantown 4
Despite the Morgantown varsity squad defeating rival University in grand fashion, the MHS JV team was a unable to overcome its cross-town foe, falling, 10-4.
Morgantown got on the board early, picking a run in both the 1st and 2nd quarter, but UHS snapped back with a big, eight-run 3rd inning to pull far ahead of MHS. The Mohigans added another run in the 4th, UHS put up two more in the 6th, and MHS was only able to tack on one more in the final inning, falling to the Hawks.
Chase George led UHS from the mound, pitching all seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. He struck out seven and walked one. Cody Thomas (1 for 3) and Brock McDonough (2 for 4) led the Hawks at the plate, picking up two RBIs each.
Dylan Travinski pitched for two innings, allowing six runs on two hits and walking five. Tristian Milik relieved Travinski on the mound, pitching for 3 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and four runs while only striking out one. Lance Whanger, Maddox Bowers and Riley Anderson all went 1 for 3 at the plate and accounted for the Mohigans three RBIs. Ethan Dorkins accounted for the final MHS run on a stolen base.
