MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The University boys’ lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter Wednesday night against Preston and did not look back, eventually earning a 13-3 win at Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium.
Stats were not available for the Hawks (3-2) were unavailable at deadline. For the Knights (1-8), Riley Land scored all three goals. Zeke Lilly had 11 saves in goal.
“We kept it close with one of the oldest teams in the league,” PHS coach Jeff Dreisbach said.” Freshman Riley Land had all of our goals. He is going to develop into a fine player.”
UHS will play at Wheeling Park at 2 p.m. Saturday, while Preston will play at 1 p.m. May 15 at Linsly.
Softball
John Marshall 15, University 0
The Monarchs had a major offensive explosion in the 3rd inning, scoring 12 runs in the frame while only recording one out to blow out the Hawks in a three-inning mercy rule ending.
Ally Jansen and Autumn Stemple recorded the only two hits of the game for UHS. John Marshall hit three home runs and had three doubles.
The Hawks will face Wheeling Park on the road at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Girls’ lacrosse
University 12, Preston 0
The Hawks were able to get back to .500 with a shutout win over the Knights in Kingwood.
UHS (3-3) were led by four players who scored two goals each — Morgan Ryan, Olivia Staud, Rebecca Chmiel and Sela Chico. Kendall Kirby, Rachel Shockley, Kelsie Kyle and Haley Livengood also found the back of the net.
Kirby (2), Staud, Chmiel and Alexis Stewart were each credited with assists. Lexi Starcher had nine saves in goal for the shutout.
The Hawks will play at Morgantown on Friday.
